  • Warner Chilcott swings to profit as expenses fall

    4 May 2012 | 10:11 am
Warner Chilcott PLC WCRX swung to a profit in the first quarter as reduced expenses helped offset continued revenue declines and weak sales of its key Actonel osteoporosis treatment. Results easily beat expectations, but the company lowered its guidance for the year, calling for earnings of $3.30 to $3.40 a share on revenue of $2.4 billion to $2.5 billion.

  • Merck profit rises 67% on lower costs

    27 Apr 2012 | 7:47 am
Merck & Co.'s MRK first-quarter earnings rose 67% as the drug maker's cost controls helped offset slower-than-expected sales growth. Merck, like its rivals, has been cutting costs as part of an effort to soften the hit from increased generic competition. The company's top-selling allergy and asthma medication Singulair loses patent exclusivity in August and the ripple-effect from generic versions of rival Pfizer Inc.'s (PFE) cholesterol fighter Lipitor have contributed to a decline in sales of Merck's anticholesterol drug Vytorin.

These days, people are quite interested with new treatments for osteoporosis especially that Merck has somehow got away with Fosamax lawsuits. If we are to remember, Merck & Co. received many complaints which turned into numerous lawsuits due to the adverse effects people have experienced from using the drug, which according to reports, already came into the knowledge of its manufacturer.
